It is the strangest feeling to have a 5 year-old. It really seems like a landmark age for some reason. I'm not really sure why, but all of a sudden a child seems so grown up once they have a full hand of fingers to show their age.
Samantha had a fun birthday. We did the usual breakfast surprise, which was good, and then she had a birthday party with her friends a few days after her birthday. We had the most awesome treasure hunt. It started with a phone call from Grandpa Carpenter telling Samantha and all her friends that there was a treasure and that the first clue would be found in someone's pocket! It was in Paul's pocket, which started an awesome hunt, with rhyming clues that sent them all over the yard. The treasure was hanging high up in the trees along our path through the woods, so all the kids were told to look UP to find the treasure. It was AWESOME!! The kids were hanging on every word of the clues, then they raced like mad to find the next clue. Then they tried to figure out how we could get the treasure down. It was so fun!! I recommend treasure hunts to everyone.

Yes. I made the cake, and I was very happy with how it turned out. I discovered the spray paint stuff, and used it to spray the blue on - I love that stuff!I have so much that I love about Samantha. She is my dependable, sweet, child - with a little bit of hyper spunkiness mixed in. She has a great laugh, and she loves to make other people laugh. She is a very smart girl. She loves to read and write and do her "math". She loves to play the piano - the few songs that she can. Paul and I weren't aware of what can occur when your child learns to read - not only does she remember every rule, but now she can read signs like "No Parking." So basically we can't get away with anything :) Samantha loves her brother Adam and loves playing with him and taking care of him. She loves her sister Anna, too, but sometimes she has a hard time understanding that 3 year-old's just don't do everything the same as 5 year-old's. Samantha has a great talent for high singing. She thinks that to sing beautifully you must sing high with lots of vibrato. Paul and I have a very hard time keeping a straight face when Samantha pipes in with her lovely renditions. It is very funny, and very high. It doesn't matter how high the song originally is sung, but she jumps that octave and sings it on key in that heavenly register of hers! She is an individual in so many ways! We love her and are so glad she's in our family!
